San Bartolo Beach

San Bartolo Beach is located in the Central Coast of Peru, Lima Province, Peru. San Bartolo beach is a perfect place for surf lovers. Strong waves feature San Bartolo beach all year long. There are different types of waves for any level of surfing. Penascal right reef break is one of the most popular and appealing surfing spots. Being a favorable place for surfers, the beach is not so welcoming or those who love lying on the beach and swimming in warm clear water. This is because the average water temperature is about 16° and the sea is never calm. Don't look for a luxury there; San Bartolo is a classic surf resort where you will plunge into the true Peruvian life and atmosphere. The peak amount of visitors is noticed during summer months of December and January.

How to Get There: San Bartolo Beach is located 53 km from the city of Lima. It takes approximately 45 minutes to get there by car if you follow the route Panamericana sur. Shuttle buses and taxis offer a regular service between San Bartolo and Lima. The entrance to the beach is marked by "perrito de metal" (a dog sculpture made of metal).

Penascal Surf Hotel is located within walking distance of main surfing spots and offers moderate prices and nice dining. The hotel is run by people who have years of experience in surfing.

Sol y Mar Hotel is located near the bay and features stylish accommodation and beautiful views of the Pacific Ocean from the balconies.

Playa Mar Hostal is situated on a bluff with the views of the ocean and city, The Hostal features rustic design with bamboo ceilings. Some of the rooms have private bathrooms, but others have communal facilities, so remember to ask about that when booking a room.

Hostal La Marina is an affordable option for the budget travelers, however, it also has a number of rooms with picturesque views of the ocean and wide range of amenities.

Kahunas Hostal is especially popular among surfers, because it is run by the former Peruvian champion Makki Block. The Hostal rents different surfing stuff and offer lessons to guests. Due to the favorable location, many rooms open beautiful views on the beach and the well-known Penascal surfing break.

Where to Eat: There are a few restaurants that offer delicious seafood. Among the most closest ones are Rock Fish Resobar, Punta Negra, Guido's, El Piloto, Restaurant Chibicheria, El Rincon del Churre, etc. Don't forget to try the famous chicharrones -a dish made of fried pork rinds); sometimes, it is made from chicken or beef, and picarones - a popular Peruvian dessert known from the colonial times which is made from squash and sweet potato.

Places to Visit: visit the town of San Bartolo and take a walk along Malecon San Martin.

Ocean: the Pacific Ocean

Types of Waves: right and left, reef-break, big and strong, in some days - with tubular section. Clean groundswells prevail on the beach; the best swell direction is from the south southwest.

Water Temperature: the average water temperature is about 16°.

Weather: the average temperature in summer is about 28° winter is usually mild with light rains and the temperature never falling below 12°.
