Agios Ioannis Kastri

The beach of Agios Ioannis Kastri or simply known as Kastri is situated on Sithonia peninsula's most magnificent and preserved areas of Halkidiki. Moreover, this place is famous for its fantastic beaches and villages. Located on the western portion of Sithonia, Agios Ioannis Kastri beach has a secluded cove that is set away from the highly organized beach resorts of Nikiti.

Agios Ioannis Kastri means Saint John on the Castle. Many Greeks believed that there was a small castle that protects the island against pirates and threats of enemy invasion.

If you are looking for fun activitites, you can do swimming and sunbathing here. You will also notice that the usual amenities provided to tourists and travelers are not present. Since this is a secluded cove, there are only few sun beds and umbrellas available. If you are looking for an adventure during your stay here in Agios Ioannis Kastri, you can have a trekking trip to the hill of Itamos and Psaria forest in order to enjoy the magnificent mountainous landscape plus the traditional settlements that lies in the peninsula.

There is a small church in Agios Ioannis Kastri that you can also visit. You have to climb 110 stairs in order to reach the church. On this church, the wedding scenes of a Hollywood film entitled Mamma Mia were shot and filmed in 2007. This church used to be a monastery wherein ancient Greeks worshipped their gods.
